Few Breakdowns for Iowa Caucus Voters.... Why??
Fri Jan 04, 2008 at 08:47:35 AM PDT
Someone mentioned elsewhere that they've been having a hard time finding breakdowns for last night's Iowa caucus voters.
The 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month
Mon Nov 12, 2007 at 08:58:25 AM PDT
My late dad never cared much for "Veterans Day." Oh, he had only utmost respect for all of our veterans, living and dead, and instilled that ethic in all seven of his kids. No, the reason he didn't like it was its name.

Big Muddy's Risin'
Thu May 10, 2007 at 07:45:52 AM PDT
Imagine a place where you can stand and watch every drop of groundwater from every stream and every snow capped mountain from the Continental Divide to the west, Canada to the North, and parts of Texas to the south, float right past you, just a few inches under your feet. You can stand on the banks of the Missouri River, about a 1/2 mile from this keyboard and see that most every day. Sometimes I do that, go down to the Big River and just gaze at it for awhile. It's fun to stand down on the bank of the mighty MO and imagine where that water flowing past you right now was just a a few hours, few days, a few weeks, or even a few months ago. Hi there, water from North Dakota! Hey there, little drops from Steamboat Springs, Colorado! Oh, look -- there's some water that was way up in Montana a few weeks ago....and, oh sweet Jesus, is that some detritus from that awful tornado in Greensburg, Kansas the other day? Hmmm, suddenly this is not all good and happy water, is it? Yikes, there's someone's rain gutter ripped from a house in Topeka during their floods last week. Geez, I hope they're okay...
BREAKING (wind)! Gas smell envelopes Manhattan. BiPM denies culpability.
Mon Jan 08, 2007 at 08:17:09 AM PDT
A stinky cloud of foul smelling gas has been reported in many areas of Manahattan. I must note here that Cheers and Jeers is off on Monday and Bill in Portland Maine may or may not be visiting New York City this morning.
Here we go again: Swiftboating Nancy Pelosi
Thu Nov 09, 2006 at 07:22:20 AM PDT
I correspond with a number of old friends and a few of them are (gasp!) Republicans. Some of them are on email lists which spread all the latest dirt, rumors, and foment going on in the back rooms and chat rooms of the far Right. One guy in particular is very good about sending me the latest goop scoops. In '04 this guy sent me a full copy of the Kerry Swiftboat charges almost a full week before it hit any of the media. He sure keeps me busy googling and surfing all the Urban Legends and Hoax sites coming up with evidence to refute the charges. To his credit, when I do come up with refutations he does send them around to all his right wing buddies.
Now they're recycling "scary" tales about the next Speaker of the House and you can bet that in the next few days this stuff will be posted on every rightwing message board numerous times. Here's one of the swiftboatish things that have been making the internets and email chains about Nancy Pelosi. I could use some help coming up with ammo to counter this stuff.
MO-Sen I voted for Claire today -- OVER A DOZEN TIMES!!!
Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 08:14:34 PM PDT
14 times to be exact. No, I didn't cheat. I didn't find some deceased voters' registration cards. There wasn't anything illegal about it. In reality, I cast my one and only ballot at 6:05 this morning, minutes after the polls opened here in Missouri. The other thirteen votes?
Follow me after the flip...
We're in the World Series!!! Oh great.... Now, what?
Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 09:58:33 PM PDT
I grew up in Detroit -- not the 'burbs -- DEtroit, baby; NW Side; Cody High. Drag racing my first Sportster down Telegraph Road. Blowin' the doors off GTO's on Woodward Ave. Countless fond memories of many, many days taking the bus down Michigan Ave. to sit in the 50 cent bleachers and cheer for Al Kaline, Bill Freehan and all the great Tiger players in the 1960's. The Tigers were my first baseball love. Only Tiger baseball cards (duplicate Topps, of course) graced my bicycle spokes, clipped on with a clothespin to make that blub, blub, blub "motorcycle" sound when I was a little kid.
(Don't) HOST MY F*CKING IMAGES, KOS!! [Updated]
Sat Aug 26, 2006 at 09:58:56 AM PDT
Good Bye Cruel Hotlinks.
As of last night, you cannot display images in your dKos diaries or comments, unless those images come from one of the "pre-approved" sites:
- imageshack.us
- photobucket.com
- flickr.com
- dailykos.com
As far as I know, only admins can host anything on dailykos.com so that leaves three commercial hosting sites for the average Kog to use.
Wild speculation and conspiracy theories on the flip side...
Fire In The Hole!
Wed Jun 28, 2006 at 08:10:23 AM PDT
The Big Hole, that is.... The Grand Canyon. Wildfires sweeping around the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park have closed the main access road to that beautiful and less bespoiled section of the huge national park. Meanwhile, lightning from "dry" thunderstorms, careless smokers, and -- in at least one case -- arsonists, combined with drought and high winds in the Southwest have caused numerous other major wild fires in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah including at least a dozen different fires scorching thousands of acres of the Navajo Nation.
Why is this midwestener so interested in these fires? They are all happening in many of the same places I rode through on my motorcycle trip home from Yearly Kos recently. Several of those fires were already taking hold when I was there just a couple weeks ago.
Public Broadcasters Fight Back Against CPB
Wed Nov 16, 2005 at 07:00:33 AM PDT
Kenneth Konz, the Inspector General looking into political bias at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), has released his report to the CPB Board. It is devastating to the political hacks that President George W. Bush has selected to control this public broadcasting funding conduit. Kenneth Tomlinson resigned his presidency ahead of the report and was replaced by Patricia Harrison, whose main experience has been raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the RNC and Bush's re-election campaign.
Pubcasters are now calling for her resignation, as well.

White Separatists Cash In On Katrina
Thu Sep 08, 2005 at 10:15:31 AM PDT
Poisonous snakes and alligators are not the only reptiles preying on victims of this disaster. The Missouri Attorney General's office has moved to freeze the assets of St. Louis based Frank Weltner, who is soliciting money for "aid" to white victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Blew Holes: Why Levees Break
Wed Aug 31, 2005 at 12:12:43 AM PDT
Dammit Jim, I'm a farmer not a hydrologist!
But I know why levees break.
Blew holes.
Here's how it works, and what may well happen to New Orleans, below the fold:
Paul Hackett on NPR's Diane Rehm Show
Mon Aug 08, 2005 at 08:01:37 AM PDT
Major Paul Hackett is on NPR's Diane Rehm show this morning as one member of a several person panel discussing the effects of the Iraq war on returned military personnel and their families.
The Diane Rehm Show
Military Service and the War in Iraq
Diane talks about military service and the war in Iraq with Iraq veterans, a military spouse and the producer of a recent radio documentary about military families.
Major Hackett is not touting his recent candidacy or, indeed, anything having to do with his own political aspirations. The discussion is focused entirely on the subject, including his insightful comments on benefits for war veterans.
It was a great show, and will be available for streaming via WAMU-FM's (the orginating station) website later today.
N P R - And how you fix it.
Mon Mar 14, 2005 at 07:58:52 AM PDT
Do you really want to make a difference?
I once was a "suit" fairly high up at NPR, back in the 80's, a few careers ago. A lot of things have changed there since then, but the basics are still the same.
Some tips about how you can affect things at NPR appear below the fold. First, here's a one paragraph backgrounder.
National "Public" Radio is a bit of a misnomer. NPR is a private non-profit membership organization made up of its affiliate "member" radio stations. NPR gets almost no money directly from the feds anymore. Congress funds CPB (the Corporation for Public Broadcasting) which gives most of its available money for radio directly to individual stations in the form of "Community Service Grants." The largest portion of each station's Community Service Grant is a matching grant. The CSG is enhanced by the amount of "non-federal financial support" that the station raises -- the biggest part of this for most stations is your donations, i.e., listener support. In other words, the more they raise locally, the more they get from Uncle Sam. More...
